Round Bird Can't Fly

A trip to the Yarra Valley for a glass of vino or two is every savvy Melburnian’s dream weekend. Why not drop by Round Bird Can’t Fly for a bite to eat or some coffee on the way... The first solo venture of Laura Webb-James and Evan James who most recently were a team to be reckoned with at Yering Station as the head chef and restaurant/cellar door manager. Their menu is shaped around seasonal produce and they source their produce form local suppliers. The interior features polished concrete floors, white tiled walls, and artwork by Mike Emmett and Bec Jones when I visited.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
·        Fried upma, poached eggs, eggplant lime pickle, sour cream ($17.00)
·        Chia pudding, mango puree, blueberry, toasted pepitas, coconut sorbet ($14.00)
·        Pork belly, chipotle and sweet corn dauphine, beans, fried egg, sourdough ($18.00)
·        Chocolate croquettes, raspberry sorbet, Chantilly cream ($14.00)

WHAT WE ATE...
I chose the ‘Ricotta gnocchi with pumpkin puree, kale and pine nuts ($17.00)’. This meal also gave you the option to add prosciutto or chorizo for an extra $4.50, which I decided against. The seared pillows of gnocchi were beautifully complimented by the pumpkin puree. A plentiful amount of pine nuts and the crispy kale added texture to the dish. It was incredibly delectable and very filling!

My dining companion picked the ‘Scotch egg, cornichons, toasted brioche, BBQ sauce ($18.00)’. The plating for this meal was very artistic and the runny yolk looked very inviting. Although this meal was yummy, it did lack a bit of seasoning in the meat component.

WHAT WE DRANK...
A ‘Real’ Chai ($4.00) or a small milkshake ($6.50) are available but I ordered a Latte ($3.80). Made with Chum Creek Coffee roasted by Greg Liney and milk from Jonesy’s Dairy, the coffee was delicious with a hint of blistered foam.

SERVICE...
Five-star service in the outer eastern suburbs... Love it! Water is topped up frequently, plates cleared as soon as they are finished... Fantastic.
