Hawthorn Common

There is nothing common about Hawthorn Common... The eatery uses only seasonal produce and makes everything from scratch. They also have an onsite stone mill bakery, coffee roaster and heat microbe based composter to handle all their organic waste. The space is bright and roomy with an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs at work. Dining on the outdoor deck amongst the greenery is also an enjoyable way to spend your afternoon.

WHAT’S ON THE MENU?
·        Barley Salad – char-grilled capsicum, goats feta, cranberries, basil, hazelnut ($16.00)
·        Pancakes – Tamarillo strawberry jam, honeyed cream cheese, salted caramel, musk meringue ($14.00)
·        BBQ Salad – char-grilled chicken breast, charred baby cos, smoked almond, pickled daikon, paprika emulsion ($26.00)
·        40 Degree Poached Trout – kohlrabi, mustard milk, apple, brioche ($18.00)

WHAT WE ATE...
I picked the ‘Flan – ricotta, cured trout, dill, beetroot relish, sour cream and brioche ($18.00)'. What an enchanting dish! It looked almost too pretty to eat... but of course I did anyway. The slivers of flan were indulgent and the extremely generous serving of cured trout added more lavishness. Thankfully, the tartness of the vibrant beetroot balanced the dish.

My dining companion chose one of their daily specials. The ‘Smoked scamorza, ricotta and sweet corn fritters – avocado cream, heirloom tomatoes, bush tomato chutney, poached egg ($18.00)’. If you are wondering what scamorza is, it’s a mozzarella-like cheese made form cow’s milk. This was also a beautifully plated meal. The fritters were golden and crunchy on the outside and soft, salty lusciousness on the inside. The tangy bush tomato chutney offset the richness of the cheese.

WHAT WE DRANK...
If you are on a health kick after all those Easter eggs, then maybe the ‘Green Smoothie – kale, avocado, banana, dates, filtered water ($7.00)’ may captivate you. Coffee was not listed on the menu so I am unsure of the price. My latte was fabulous.
