Itali.co Sorrento

A couple of weeks ago, I turned 29. One year left until a 3 will appear at the start of my age... Anyway, I enjoyed my birthday with my loved ones down at the Mornington Peninsula. My family had a beach house at Blairgowrie when I was growing up so I have spent a lot of time down there over the years. Sorrento was always one of my favourite coastal villages to visit so I thought we should have lunch at Itali.co Sorrento, which is located right on the foreshore. You may have enjoyed a pizza at their other restaurant in St. Kilda.

Thankfully, the light rain had ceased by lunchtime. The perils of celebrating a birthday in mid-winter! We were warmly welcomed by the very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Their genuine and modest charm enthralled us as we learnt about their home towns in Italy.

Pizza, pasta, and other Italian specialties formed the base of the menu. A breakfast menu was also available. We decided to share a couple of pizzas between the four of us. With so many scrummy pizzas to choose from, we finally settled on the ‘Carbonara: Cream base, fior di latte, pancetta, sautĂ©ed onions, free range egg, pepper and grana cheese ($22.00)’ and the ‘Tartufata: White truffle cream, fior di latte, mushrooms, roquette and parmesan ($24.50)’. We were also provided with a ramekin of chilli oil to drizzle over our pizzas. Both pizzas had a beautifully thin and crisp base. You could clearly taste the high quality of the ingredients. These pizzas were definitely sexy... The creaminess of the Carbonara, with the sweetness of the sautĂ©ed onions and saltiness from the pancetta was very naughty and delicious.

The Tartufata was my favourite of the two pizzas as I just adore anything to do with truffles. Another decadent combination, the rocket cut through the richness of the truffle cream. There was not a crumb left after we had demolished both pizzas.

The pizza here is so much better than D.O.C. Mornington. If you are thinking of maybe having a pizza at D.O.C. Mornington, get back in the car immediately and keep driving down the Peninsula to Sorrento. We ended our meal with some coffees ($4.00) that were very well received by everyone.
